  • Bagua Seminar Summary - June 4 & 5, 2011

    The first day of the seminar included a review of Dragon single palm change, double palm change, following palm change and triple palm change with beginner students. Intermediate students built on the instruction in Lion changes from last seminar by learning Bagua Sabre techniques.
    Dragon dodging body change (the fifth turn) was taught, while intermediate students reviewed the other Dragon changes. The Dragon changes create the foundation for all of the other changes and are taught first. The first four teach proper koubu and baibu stepping. The latter four train the use of changing direction.

    Most of the second day was spent covering Chuanzhang application exercises:
    Triangle stepping, two person triangle stepping;
    Straight line chuanzhang using fast stepping both forwards and backward; and
    A cross stepping practice drill.

    The Training Manual for Magui Bagua introduces Chuanzhang this way:
    “Chuanzhang can be called ‘spearing palm’ or ‘threading palm’ in English… You must consider that you are threading along or through something, not just going through the air at the target, when doing chuanzhang.”

    Andrea stressed the importance of proper koubu stepping that is solid and that properly turns the body, while moving into an opponent.

    A secret shuanyao practice was also taught to help find the internal power for daishou and shoulder, elbow or backfist strikes.

    The date for her next visit to Guelph has not been set, but will be in early 2012.

    (okay, the video was actually taken at a previous seminar, but I was too busy practicing Bagua sabre to film anything)
