Training for martial arts includes unarmed training, short weapons training and long weapons training. Long weapons, because of their length demand greater skill in extension and ability to work with - not against - the characteristics of the weapon.

The spear is held in high regard in Chinese Martial arts. The form of the spear is waxwood and metal. The body is waxwood that has spring and vibrancy that makes the spear become alive. The tip can pierce, slash, snap, chop and drill. The intent of the spear moves in a circle. Quick and powerful, it is compared to a dragon that spirals and charges.
